This is the first in what I hope will be a series of articles looking at popular local places to walk dogs. In this particular article we will look at Ryton Pools Country Park. Ryton Pools is location next to the A445, about 6 miles northeast of Leamington Spa. Public transport is limited in the area so most visitors will be coming by car. There are two car parks which charge a flat rate of £3.50. The park opening hours vary by season. In winter this can be 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. In summer these hours can be extended to as much as 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.
Ryton Pools Country Park – What we like
Looking at it from the perspective of a dog owner there are a number of things we like about Ryton Pools. Firstly with the exception of the car park, visitor centre and certain picnic areas, dogs can be walked off lead. During a recent visit I noticed a couple of doggy bins for waste but if you use tied bags you can apparently also use regular bins within the park. Being a popular location with dog owners means it’s a great place for dog socialisation. It also feels like a very safe location. Being far from any roads you are not worried about your dog if it decides to chase a squirrel for example. The park is a mixture of grass and firm paths. Drainage seems to be good meaning even in winter your dog is less likely to get muddy than in some other locations. Bear in mind the pools though should you have a dog who can’t resist jumping in.
Another plus about Ryton Pools, more for us humans than the dogs relate to the facilities. As well as toilets there is the new Courtyard Cafe which appears in the top image for this article. The cafe has a good menu and is open from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm in winter and 4:00 pm in summer.
Ryton Pools Country Park – What we don’t like
To be honest there isn’t much wrong with Ryton Pools for walking dogs. The only thing I would say is that the £3.50 parking charge is expensive. It’s unlikely I would be using this location every day for my business at those rates. It would be good for example to have a reduced rate for just an hour parking as that’s all most dog walkers need. Having looked at some reviews on TripAdvisor (which are mostly very positive) most of the negative ones seem to relate to the cafe. It seems many feel the prices are expensive and service can sometimes be slow. Having never used it I can’t really comment but thought I should mention in here as there really isn’t much else to cover in terms of possible negatives.
